Discovering Play

Discovering Play, presented at a Level One level, introduces the importance of play and Playwork along with some practical elements.

Discovering Play aims to develop individuals skills to support the facilitation and development of good play environments where children can thrive. Whether this is in the home, school, parks, sports or community settings.

Upon successful completion participants will be awarded an NOCN Level 1 Award in Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development Qualification No: 601/0948/8

Course Content

Session 1: What is Play and Playwork

In our first session, we will establish some ground rules and take care of necessary housekeeping tasks. We will then delve into introductions before moving on to the main topic of Play and Playwork. Introducing the Playwork Principles. 

Session 2: How Children Play

We will explore various ways in which we as adults might understand how children are playing. Introducing the Play Types and the Play Cycle.

Session 3: Role of Adults

Play is an essential part of a child’s development. It stimulates their creativity, helps them understand the world around them, and it’s also a lot of fun! But what role does an adult have in this? Let’s explore this together.

Session 4: Creating a Good Place to Play

As we continue on this journey of understanding children’s play and creativity, we’re working together in partnership to build a safer, more enriching play environment for our children and young people.

Session 5: Getting Ready for Play

During this session we will explore the importance of health and safety and how we as Playworkers prepare for a session. We will focus on how to select appropriate play activities for freely chosen play and how to incorporate loose parts in planning for children’s play.

Session 6: Self Reflection and Evaluation

Collaboration is the key to creating meaningful and impactful play experiences. Working together ensures that every aspect of children’s play is catered to, and that the sessions are both enjoyable and beneficial to their overall development. To be an effective collaborator Playworkers are constantly reflecting on our practice and experience.
