This course will include 4 3-hour long in-person engaging sessions alongside a little bit of homework and is a great introduction to working with children at play. Click here to find out more about this course.This course is suitable for people aged 16+. \nDiscovering Play aims to develop individuals skills to support the facilitation and development of good play environments where children can thrive. Whether this is in the home\, school\, parks\, sports or community settings. This course will build skills and confidence that will support people looking to volunteer or work as Playworkers\, teaching assistants\, nursary workers\, youth workers as well as bringing a new perspective to anyone working or just living with children and young people. This course will be led by the fabulous Emma Okpaleke from Manor After school and Kids Klubs (MASKK) who brings with her a wealth of experience of working with children and young people and as a trainer. \nUpon successful completion participants will be awarded an NOCN Level 1 Award in Skills for Employment\, Training and Personal Development Qualification No: 601/0948/8. \nThe training will take place at Springs Academy School\, 10:30am-1:30pm on Thurs 6th\, 13th\, 20th and 27th August.   \nPlease book to attend. If you have booked and can no longer make it\, please let us know so we can offer the place to others. \n  \nAbout gaining practical experience\n…through supported volunteering this Summer. We will be running Playing Out sessions for 8-15 year olds on Gleadless Common across the Summer. Designed as a cross‑sector gathering\, the conference shines a spotlight on play for all children\, across the whole of childhood\, recognising its role in shaping healthy\, creative and resilient communities. Rooted in Sheffield’s growing movement for child‑friendly spaces\, the event builds on the momentum of local organisations who are working collaboratively to protect and extend meaningful play opportunities across the city. \nPlay is not just an activity but a fundamental right. \nThis conference has emerged from Sheffield Play Partnership’s work to reverse the decline in community play provision\, strengthen local capacity\, and expand access to high‑quality Playwork training. Our work includes mapping citywide provision\, identifying gaps\, developing new community‑led play projects\, and championing collaborative models that connect voluntary groups\, families and local authorities. Find out more about the projects we are working on. \nThere’s wonderful work going on across Sheffield and beyond to reinvigorate play in our communities. This inaugural conference is the first step in an ambition to gather the region’s play community in one place to energise this shared mission—supporting a future in which every child has the time\, space and permission to play. SUMMARY:Playwork in Primary Schools Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This practical CPD workshop introduces how to implement a playwork approach in primary schools\, how this can improve wrap-around care and support positive behaviour interventions\, by placing children’s voice\, choice and creativity at the heart of provision. \nDrawing on practical experience and experience of traditional and PARS (Playwork Action Research System) model\, the training will demonstrate how simple\, low-cost changes to environment\, resources and staff practice can significantly enhance children’s play experiences\, wellbeing and engagement. \nParticipants will gain insight into how to create inclusive\, flexible spaces that balance calm and active play\, support children of all ages and needs\, and encourage independence. The session will also explore the evolving role of the playworker within school settings\, including supporting behaviour\, wellbeing and learning through play\, alongside maintaining strong safeguarding and record-keeping practices. \nThe training will cover: \n\nHow to create engaging\, child-led environments with balanced opportunities for active and calm play\, supporting pupils with SEND and SEMH needs and improving readiness to learn\nCreating enabling environments through zoning\, loose parts and adaptable spaces\nUnderstanding play types and recognising the value of child-led play\nWhen to intervene in play and when to step back\nPractical strategies for inclusive wraparound provision (mixed ages\, quiet spaces\, outdoor play)\nSupporting behaviour and wellbeing through playwork approaches\nThe role of playworkers across the school day\, including 1:1 and small group support\nSafeguarding responsibilities and best practice in recording (e.g. CPOMS)\n\nAfter completing this session\, you or your team members might want to join one of the Discovering Play courses to learn more about implementing the Playwork approach.

DESCRIPTION:Explore the fascinating world of loose parts; a theory of how not to cheat children\, first developed by landscape architect Simon Nicholson in 1971. \nWhat do people mean when they talk about loose parts? \nIt’s been a part of playwork practice for many years\, probably since the first adventure playgrounds were established in the mid twentieth century before ‘loose parts’ had a name and a theory. \nThe popularity of loose parts is growing\, more play settings\, playschemes\, early years\, schools and other professions working with children are taking it up since recognising the benefits loose parts play has for children’s cognitive\, physical and emotional development. PLUS it’s FUN! \nThis interactive 2 hour workshop is taking place at Pitsmoor Adventure Playground. There’ll be a buffet\, bar and an opportunity to toast some marshmallows!
