Sheffield Week of Play ’25: October Half Term

Sheffield Week of Play is an annual celebration dedicated to recognising play opportunities across the city for children, young people, and families. During this week, organisations holding space and time for children to play, particularly school age children, will be shouting about their work and we will be helping to amplify them, to build recognition and understanding of the impact these projects make in their communities. These spaces and places are often run by community groups, charities and other voluntary sector organisations and fuelled by a lot of love and dedication.
Play is essential for children’s development and wellbeing. Through play, children learn about the world around them, develop problem-solving skills, build confidence, and strengthen their relationships with others. It supports physical health through active movement, emotional growth through expression and resilience-building, and cognitive development through curiosity and experimentation. Play gives children the freedom to take risks, make decisions, and learn in a way that feels natural and joyful.
For young people, play continues to play a vital role in mental health and social connection. Opportunities for unstructured play and recreation help reduce stress, build teamwork, and foster a sense of belonging and identity.
Sheffield Play Partnership, and the organisations we work with want to remind communities, institutions and decision makers that play isn’t just a leisure activity — it’s a fundamental part of growing up and living well. By prioritising play, we support happier, healthier, and more creative children and young people who are better equipped to face future challenges.
